Why Toilets

simple idea. world-changing results

We tip our cap to the humble “porcelain throne,” the “smol haos,” the toilet as one of history’s most vital inventions. Far more than a mere convenience, proper sanitation serves as the bedrock of global health, human dignity, and economic progress. While the toilet is the foundational focus of our work, our impact is built on comprehensive sanitation systems—integrating protected water sources, hygienic restrooms, private showers, and sustainable drainage to create a permanent foundation for community well-being.

Why Toilets?

simple idea. world-changing results

The Ripple Effect of Sanitation

When we install a "Smol Haos," we aren't just building a restroom—we are unlocking progress across four critical pillars of society.

Health

In the communities where we work, testing has revealed that not a single source of accessible groundwater is free from E. coli. This contamination is a silent killer.

Health

The Global Burden:
Unsafe WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) is responsible for 1.4 million deaths annually.

The Impact on Children:
Nearly 7 out of 10 diarrhea deaths in young children are preventable through universal access to safe WASH. Currently, 273,000 children under five die every year from these preventable causes—a staggering 7.6% of all deaths in this age group.

A Crisis for Mothers:
In Vanuatu, the infant mortality rate stands at 1 in 50. When maternal healthcare facilities lack clean water and private toilets, a place of healing becomes a place of infection.

Education

Improved facilities keep children in classrooms. Without private, safe restrooms, students—particularly young girls—are often forced to choose between their education and their dignity.

Education

Breaking the Cycle:
Chronic absenteeism due to “period poverty” is directly linked to higher dropout rates and reduced future job opportunities.

The Reality of Absence:
Globally, 1 in 4 students who menstruate experience period poverty. When a school lacks a “Smol Haos,” girls are forced to use unhygienic substitutes or miss school altogether due to fear and embarrassment.

Academic Success:
When students have access to clean, private facilities, they can focus on their work rather than their basic survival.

Economic Growth

Sanitation is a massive economic engine. For every dollar invested in sanitation, the return in productivity and reduced medical costs is exponential.

Economic Growth

Efficiency in Healthcare:
In the world’s 46 least-developed countries, the lack of WASH in healthcare facilities costs $8.4 billion annually in infections. Providing basic WASH would cost nearly the same amount—meaning the investment pays for itself almost immediately by preventing up to 70% of those infections.

Time is Wealth:
Improving WASH access frees up 122 million working days annually for women and girls who currently spend hours every day trekking for water.

Climate Resilience:
In a disaster-prone nation like Vanuatu, every $1 spent on flood-resilient WASH infrastructure avoids $62 in future recovery costs.

Environment

Over 60% of ni-Vanuatu rely on their land as their primary source of income. When sanitation fails, the environment suffers.

Environment

The Crisis of Open Defecation:
91% of people who must practice open defecation live in rural areas. This leads to the direct contamination of the soil and water sources that communities rely on for farming and drinking.

Clean Water for All:
Globally, 1.7 billion people use drinking water sources contaminated with feces. By installing “Smol Haos” systems with sustainable drainage, we protect the groundwater and ensure that the land remains a healthy, productive resource for the generations to come.
